Not much is known of Gandhi’s early childhood, but it is thought that he was highly influenced by the Jainism faith of his family.
In 1888, at the age of 19, Gandhi went to London to study law. He was called to the bar in 1891, but instead of returning to India, he decided to stay in South Africa, where he had gone to work as a lawyer for an Indian firm.
It was in South Africa that Gandhi developed the philosophy of nonviolent resistance that he would later bring back to India. He was appalled by the discrimination and racism faced by the Indian community in South Africa, and he began to advocate for their rights.
In 1915, Gandhi returned to India, where he would lead the country’s struggle for independence from British rule. He is most famous for his campaigns of nonviolent civil disobedience, such as the Salt March of 1930.
After years of peaceful protests and civil disobedience, Gandhi helped lead India to independence in 1947. He then served as the country’s first Prime Minister, but resigned from office in 1948, after a series of disagreements with the Indian government.
Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by a Hindu nationalist. His birthday, October 2, is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday in India.
