Collo was born in the small town of Pula on the island of Ischia, Italy. At the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the Italian Navy and completed his training as a naval officer. He then served in the Mediterranean Sea and was later transferred to the Atlantic Ocean. In 1847, he was appointed captain of the brigantine “Collo”.
In 1849, Collo and his crew were sailing near the coast of Africa when they were attacked by a group of pirates. The pirates boarded the ship and began to loot and pillage the cargo. Collo and his crew fought back and managed to repel the pirates. They then continued on their voyage to America.
