Daily Dose of Science App Overview and Details
A new study has found that the Zika virus can persist in the semen of some men for up to six months after they show symptoms of the infection. This is the longest known period of viral shedding in semen to date.
The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle, looked at semen samples from Zika-infected men in Brazil. The men had all shown symptoms of the virus within a week of donating the samples.
Of the 82 men studied, the researchers found that the Zika virus was detectable in the semen of 41 of them. The virus was still detectable in 33 of the men after six months.
The findings suggest that the Zika virus may be able to persist in the semen of some men for a long time after they show symptoms of the infection. This could increase the risk of sexual transmission of the virus.
The study was published in the journal JAMA Infectious Diseases.
