Diwani na Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass Warash was born in 1876 in the village of Warash in the Upper Nile region of what is now Sudan. He was a descendant of the Khalifa, the religious leader of the Mahdi rebellion against the Ottoman Turks in the late 19th century. Inyass Warash was educated in religious schools in the Sudan and in Cairo, where he studied law. He returned to Sudan in 1902 and began a career as a judge and a teacher.
Inyass Warash was a leader of the Ansar, the followers of the Mahdi. He was opposed to the British occupation of Sudan and fought against them in the 1920s. He was also opposed to the policies of the British-backed Sudanese government and called for the establishment of an Islamic state in Sudan.
