Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of the actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and the actor David Poe, Jr. After his father abandoned the family in 1810, Poe was raised by his mother and stepfather, John Allan, in Richmond, Virginia. At a young age, Poe showed a talent for writing and published his first poem, “Tamerlane,” at the age of thirteen. He attended the University of Virginia but was expelled for gambling and drinking.
In 1827, Poe moved to Baltimore, where he published his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems. He married his young cousin, Virginia Clemm, in 1835. The following year, Poe published his only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. He worked as an editor and critic for various magazines, and in 1845, he became the editor of the Broadway Journal.
