Born to a middle-class family in Rosario, Santa Fe, Guevara studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires. He traveled throughout South America and was radicalized by the poverty, hunger, and disease he witnessed. In 1955, he joined the Cuban Revolution as a member of Fidel Castro’s July 26 Movement, and rose to prominence as a leader of the rebel army. Guevara played a pivotal role in the successful overthrow of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959.
After the Cuban Revolution, Guevara performed a number of key roles in the new government. He served as Minister of Industry (1961–1965), President of the National Bank of Cuba (1965–1966), and Minister of Finance (1966–1967). He also served as the Commander of the Cuban Revolution from 1959 to 1965.
