Evening Standard App Overview and Details
article
The woman who accused two top British politicians of sexual assault has dropped her case, the Evening Standard has learned.
The 33-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had alleged that she was sexually assaulted by Labour MP Kelvin Hopkins, 76, and Liberal Democrat peer Lord Rennard, 58, in 2014.
However, the woman’s lawyer told the Standard today that she was withdrawing her allegations against both men.
It is understood that the woman has not provided a reason for her decision.
Hopkins, who has represented Luton North since 1997, was suspended from the Labour Party in November after the allegations against him were first made public.
Rennard, a former chief of staff to ex-Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown, was also accused of sexual misconduct by a number of women in 2013, but was later cleared of any wrongdoing.
In a statement, a Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all allegations of sexual harassment, abuse and discrimination extremely seriously.
“Following the suspension of Kelvin Hopkins, we have now received notice that the individual making the allegations has withdrawn their complaint. The Labour Party will now be procedurally proceeding with the case in accordance with our rules and regulations.”
A Lib Dem spokesperson said: “We note the decision of the complainant to withdraw their allegations against Lord Rennard. We respect their decision and thank them for their courage in coming forward.”
