Jazz trumpet prodigy Miles Davis was born in 1926 in Alton, Illinois. He began playing the trumpet at the age of thirteen and within two years, was playing with local bands. After graduating from high school, Davis attended Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied with renowned trumpet teacher, Claude Thornhill. In 1944, while still a student at Juilliard, Davis was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in World War II. After his discharge, he returned to New York and resumed playing jazz.
In 1945, Davis formed his first quintet, which included saxophonist John Coltrane. The group made its debut at the Royal Roost Club in New York and soon became one of the most popular jazz bands in the city. In 1955, Davis released his landmark album, “Birth of the Cool,” which helped to define the sound of cool jazz. Davis went on to record dozens of albums and his music has been cited as an influence by many jazz musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and Herbie Hancock.
Davis died in 1991 at the age of 65. He is considered one of the most important jazz musicians of all time and has been dubbed the “father of cool jazz.”
