The John Muir National Historic Site (JMNHS) is a unit of the National Park Service located in Martinez, California. It preserves the home, gardens, and Philosophy of naturalist John Muir.
Muir was born in Scotland in 1838 and emigrated to the United States in 1849. He eventually made his home in California, where he became a prominent advocate for the preservation of wilderness areas. In 1892 he purchased a large tract of land in Martinez and began developing it as a nature reserve. In 1964 the property was donated to the National Park Service, and it was designated as the John Muir National Historic Site.
The site is open to the public and contains a variety of exhibits and displays that interpret the life and work of John Muir. There are also a number of nature trails and gardens to explore.
